About the Destination
Kipling's jungle, and one of central India's most watchable forests.
Pench sits across the Madhya Pradesh–Maharashtra border, named for the river that runs through the middle of it. This is the country Rudyard Kipling drew on for The Jungle Book, and the landscape still reads that way — teak forest opening into grassland, the river cutting through, high ridges on either side. The MP side is entered through Turia, Karmajhiri and Jamtara; Nagpur airport is roughly 90 km from the Turia gate.
It is a forest of open sightlines, which is why first-time visitors do well here. Chital gather in herds of a hundred or more on the meadows. Pench also holds one of India's better populations of dhole, the Indian wild dog, which hunt in daylight and in packs. Beyond the tigers there are leopards, sloth bears, gaur, and upwards of 250 recorded bird species along the river.

Why visit this destination
Pench rewards patience differently from the denser parks. Because so much of it is open, you spend less time waiting at a thicket and more time watching a whole valley — which is where the forest actually explains itself. Alarm calls carry. You see the langur before you hear it, and the sambar turn before either.
Unique Propositions
The forest Kipling wrote The Jungle Book about
Open teak and grassland with long, clear sightlines
Strong dhole population, active in daylight
Closest major park to Nagpur — an easy first safari
What truly sets Japan apart is how immersive and thoughtful each experience feels. Whether wandering through quiet temple grounds, enjoying a traditional meal, or navigating lively urban streets, every moment feels intentional and deeply memorable.
