About the Destination
Sal forest, open meadows, and a deer that exists nowhere else on earth.
Kanha is the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh and one of the largest in India — tall sal forest broken by wide grassland meadows the locals call maidans, spread across Mandla and Balaghat districts. It is entered through Kisli, Kanha, Mukki and Sarhi. Jabalpur airport is roughly 160 km from the Kisli side; Raipur is the closer approach for Mukki.
Kanha is the only place in the world you can see the hard-ground barasingha. The subspecies came within a few dozen animals of extinction here in the 1960s and was brought back by the park's own recovery programme — it is now the state animal of Madhya Pradesh. Alongside them are tigers, leopards, dhole, gaur, and one of central India's richest bird lists.

Why visit this destination
The maidans are what people remember. Standing grass the colour of wheat, sal trees at the edges, and a scale that makes the vehicle feel small. It is a slower forest than Bandhavgarh and a bigger one, which suits travellers who would rather spend a week understanding one place than photograph three.
Unique Propositions
